Malta
Malta was founded to solve a key challenge of the energy transition: enabling reliable, affordable, and scalable long-duration energy storage.
Malta’s Journey
Malta Inc. was born from the ideas of a Nobel Prize–winning Stanford physicist who theorized that the fastest path to decarbonizing electricity was through the integration of existing technologies and supply chains.
The concept was incubated at X, Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory, where the team identified the potential to unlock low-cost clean energy to meet global demand.
After demonstrating the feasibility of a thermo-electric energy storage system that could operate at scale and compete on price, Malta spun out as an independent company.
Malta-D: A Strategic Milestone for Scalable Clean Energy Storage
Today, Malta Inc. is developing a 14 MWh electricity-to-electricity commercial demonstration plant in Puertollano, Spain, starting construction in 2025. Supported by a strategic agreement with BBVA, one of Europe’s leading financial institutions, which provides a revenue structure for the plant’s electricity generation.
Malta-D represents the first commercial-scale deployment of Malta’s long-duration energy storage technology.
Beyond Malta-D, the company continues to expand its global presence and project pipeline, partnering with utilities, grid operators, and energy-intensive industries to deliver reliable, long-duration storage solutions powered by our steam-based heat-pump technology.
