Technical Lead - Heat Exchangers

Responsibilities
We are looking for a Heat Exchanger Technical Leader who
will be responsible for leading the heat exchanger design development program
with industry-leading HX OEMs for application in Malta’s grid-scale Pumped Heat
Energy Storage plant solution. The
development program includes the HXs, and specifying interfacing components (i.e.,
heat tracing, insulations, supports), and stretches from detailed design,
through installation and validation. Additionally, you will be leading and
supporting various HX testing projects, collaborating with the external labs
and partners to support the overall HX development program. In this role, you
will need to have a critical view of the overall heat exchanger development
program from technical product requirements, cost, and schedule perspective.
The Heat Exchanger Technical Lead will report to the Director of Product and
Design Development.
Responsibilities will include:
- Lead the heat exchanger design development and improvement
programs all the way through field validation
- Own heat exchanger and interfacing components requirements
including performance, cost, schedule, availability, and reliability to
optimize requirements on a plant lifecycle basis
- Work closely with the heat exchanger OEM to resolve complex
manufacturing and scale-up issues and challenges and develop mitigation
strategies to reduce/eliminate risks
- Interface with heat exchanger OEMs and EPC and Malta’s
engineering team to assure the complete and efficient integration of the HX in
the plant design, including operability, mechanical, electrical, and
civil/structural aspects of the design
- Define the heat exchanger performance guarantee and
performance testing structure between Malta and the OEM
- Support developing the plant commissioning and testing plan,
the heat exchangers commissioning and testing plan, and site commissioning
activities
- Define heat exchanger operation and maintenance plan and
spare strategy for the warranty period and plant lifecycle
- Apply creative and innovative solutions to reduce total
installed cost and cycle time
- Support commercial and business development teams for discussions
with potential customers
- Mentor and lead junior-level engineers on the heat exchangers design
Qualifications
Required attributes:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited College
or University
- A minimum of 10 years of engineering experience
- Experience with heat exchanger sizing, and/or specifying
- Proven experience in driving projects from concept to
successful completion
- Experience in large power/industrial plant system design and
operation
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-tech,
high-profile start-up where decisions and progress must be made with imperfect
information
- Ability to interface effectively with OEMs, vendors, EPC, and external customers
- Availability to travel domestically and internationally for partner meetings, site visits, conferences, etc.
Preferred skills and background:
- Experience with heat exchanger design/development,
commissioning, performance testing, and operation
- Experience with leading heat exchanger NPI program
- Experience with 3D printing/additive manufacturing
- Experience with different manufacturing techniques for the
compact heat exchanger
- Molten salt heat exchanger design and/or field operation
experience
- Understanding of system dynamics and transients and their
effects on component sizing and performance
- Experience with plant/system/sub-system level Failure Mode
and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and reliability/availability modeling
- Strong oral and written communication skills (can synthesize
complex, multi-dimensional information in compelling collateral for executive
and technical teams)
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Very organized and detail-oriented
- Deep passion for decarbonization of the global electricity
grid
