Responsibilities
The R&D Simulation Engineer will contribute to a range of efforts for developing alternative technologies and solutions that can benefit future iterations of Malta’s grid-scale Pumped Heat Energy Storage plant solution. The scope includes the development and exploration of multi-generational product designs, through building steady-state simulation models of alternate designs, conducting trade-off studies and calculations to compare system performance and costs, and presenting key results to stakeholders. This position will also support various Strategic Initiatives team efforts, including, but not limited to, proposal/grant writing, IP development and documentation, and competitor evaluations.
This position requires strong technical communication skills for conveying findings to audiences with backgrounds in engineering and/or business development. Applicants should have an ability to adapt to changes in a fast-moving start-up environment.
Responsibilities may include:
- Evaluate alternative technologies and product designs for
future implementation
- Build steady-state and/or transient simulation models of
alternate designs
- Complete trade-off studies and calculations to compare
system performance and costs
- Conduct market analysis and use case studies for alternate
designs
- Analyze data for pilot system and develop procedures for further testing
- Contribute to other Strategic Initiatives activities,
including IP development and documentation, grant and/or proposal writing, and
competing technologies research
Qualifications
Required attributes:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited College
or University
- 2+ years of experience within an engineering field
- Familiarity and/or experience with modeling and simulating
complex processes
- Experience with data analysis, simulation tools, and
communicating key findings to a broad audience
- Proven experience in driving projects from concept to
successful completion
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-tech, high-profile start-up where decisions and progress must be made with imperfect information
Preferred skills and background:
- Adaptable, versatile, and capable of both working
independently and collaborating with a team
- Experience with MATLAB or other equivalent engineering
computational tools
- Excellent writer who is proficient in communicating concepts
and ideas
- Experience with proposal and/or grant writing
- Deep understanding of thermodynamic cycles and experience
with steady-state modeling tools like Ebsilon, Thermoflex
- Understanding of system dynamics and transients and their
effects on component sizing and performance
- Familiarity with technoeconomic assessments
- Strong oral and written communication skills (can synthesize
complex, multi-dimensional information in compelling collateral for executive
and technical teams)
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Deep passion for decarbonization of the global electricity
grid
